Some Borregans may only know me from the Borrego Sun Newspaper, where I proudly worked for nineteen years. When I moved to Borrego Springs in 1997, I already had twenty years working experience in printing and graphic art. I had been drawing and painting since I was 5-years-old. Judy Meier hired me at the Sun after I brought in a Mac floppy disk with my new baby's photo, for a birth announcement. I could use a Macintosh computer and she needed a new layout artist! It was 1999. The only print shop in town.
Thus began my time there, where I eventually replaced Paul Johnson in the black-and-white darkroom in the basement. I had extensive experience in camera/darkroom. And digital cameras were not yet being used at the Sun. I used a flatbed scanner to input printed photos.
I became their file clerk, Macintosh IT tech & trainer, darkroom tech, layout artist, map builder and graphic expert. All done on a part-time basis, while I also worked for Caldwell's Gallery in The Mall, the Bright Group, ProVision Menu Design and freelance graphics/printing for businesses all over town. And my boy grew up . . .
After the shocking demise of Mrs. Meier in 2011, another worker took on editing for one year. In 2012, that editor left and I was asked to step up. I handled all advertising accounts and interacted with clients regularly. I began writing articles, taking photos, managing staff and fixing broken toilets. I served as editor from 2013 - 2016 and am very grateful for the experience and opportunity to serve my fellow Borregans with a quality newspaper. I enjoyed the company of great staffers during my time as editor and I truly miss their company. See some of my articles here: http://www.borregosun.com/search/ellen_fitzpatrick
In 2015 I helped design the Borrego Sun website, provided all graphic elements and assisted in the ad posting and directed content delivery. As 2016 drew to a close, I decided the new girls had the energy it would take to continue the paper, and I chose to walk away and return to my graphics and art interests. I don't identify with being a newspaperman. In fact the news in general is something I tend to avoid . . . especially these days. (Worldly nonsense to this yogi.) So the Sun was really just another art job that lasted a long time.
In 2017, I opened a graphics/print shop in The Mall and expanded that to a bit of gallery space, where I am showing my own art and work of fellow artists. I received the Soroptimist "Live Your Dream" award in 2017 and took an online class in Adobe Illustrator to update my familiarity with that program in particular. I was certified in Illustrator and PhotoShop in 1996, just before relocating here.
Currently, I am working to promote The Mall and Center businesses with a newsletter printed three times yearly. See www.centermallnews.com. I have learned to create basic websites and developed eight new sites in five months' time. If my experience is something you want to apply to your promotional tools, please let me help!
Through serving others I find my own prosperity in helping to promote theirs.
